In 2001, I attended my first Charreada, or Mexican Rodeo. I've been hooked on them ever since, and have photographed at small town events and National Championships. These young boys, waiting their turn to participate, are excitedly watching the events from outside the lienzo, or arena. They are using their mounts, which are like extensions of their own bodies, as platforms to give them enough height to see over the high wall.

The displays of horsemanship, sportsmanship, daring, and especially the camaraderie and family closeness at these events never fail to impress and delight me. They have inspired many photographs, paintings and drawings, and are a continuing important theme in my work.
